Introduction

Doctors are very worried because young people spend too long in front of the computer, and don't get enough exercise.  The games that are played at school are sometimes not much fun for some people, so it's up to you to do something about it.  This WebQuest allows you to invent a new game, and you are given almost a free hand to design it in any way you like.  There have to be a few "rules" of course, but they are there only to help you - it's not as easy as you might think to create a good new game.



The Task

Have fun, be creative and be willing to take a chance.   Design a new game using one or more skills from the following list.  (Some of them have some very posh titles, but they are only included to impress your teacher.   The bits of interest to you are all in this colour.)

Locomotor movement skills
crawl, walk, jog, run, skip, hop, gallop, slide, and skip.

Non locomotor movement skills
push, pull, bend and twist.

Eye-hand coordination skills
Using the eyes and hands to work together such as catch, throw (overhand, underhand, rolling, or bouncing), and tag.

Eye-foot coordination skills
Using the eyes and feet to work together, such as kick, punt, dribble, hop, leap, and jump.

Spatial awareness
Know where the body is in space in relation to friends during a game or activity, or during individual skills such as egg roll, pencil roll, log roll, forward roll, backward roll, cartwheel, roundoff, or back bent.

Rhythm
Moving to music or a beat.

The Process

To create a new and better game, you will need to go through the following steps.  Read it through first and decide how to share out the work.  Take my word for it -- it's not as easy as it looks, so use the following guide and refer back to it often.

    The new game must include the following:

    1. Use one or more of the following sources for background information;- books, magazines, the internet, or interview somebody (Gran or Grandad would be an excellent choice).
    2. Create the rules of how to play the game.   Think carefully, or there will be squabbles and misunderstandings if they are not very clear.
    3. The type of field or playing area the game will be played on.
    4. What skills are needed to play the game? (refer to the task)
    5. How long is the game? (examples: innings, quarters, periods, or play to a certain score.)
    6. Safety factors for the game and players.
    7. Write a detailed description explaining the game, and how it is played.  Include details about the rules, the number of players, the skills involved, how the game is scored, safety factors for the game.  Also include a list of references so you can easily refer back to double check any details..

Conclusion

You have worked very hard to create a new game.  Games take a lot of thought and planning before they can be implemented or played.  Did you know that you used many different areas of study to complete this task.  I am proud of everyone that has taken the time and energy to create a new game.
